More than a million people acquire a sexually transmitted infection (STI) every day: an estimated 499 million new cases of curable STIs (gonorrhoea, chlamydia, syphilis and trichomoniasis) occur every year in addition, 536 million people are estimated to be living with incurable herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection approximately 291 million women have a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection at any given point in time the burden of STIs is greatest in low-income countries.
